My second assignment in the June 2012 issue of SeattleMet magazine is a portrait of Father Michael Ryan from Seattle’s St. James Cathedral on First Hill.
I first met Father Ryan in August of 2010 when he married two very good friends of mine. The bride told me a big reason she chose to convert to her fiance’s Catholicism— was Father Ryan. After spending an afternoon photographing him for this assignment, I understood why he is so well liked. He’s a charming, kind man who every so often, pulls out a zinger of a joke from under the collar.
Lately, he’s been raising questions—and eyebrows. As said by him in the SeattleMet article, he believes he has “… a role as a teacher in the community and I try to carry that out faithfully. I think I need to speak on behalf of the people, and give them a voice…”
And this wonderful attitude has garnered huge support from his Seattle congregation to whom he gives voice, but not all of his followers. Read more here.

The June 2012 issue of SeattleMet magazine is out now and I have two photographs included. The first is seen above, for the “On the Town” section highlighting the upcoming grand opening of the LeMay-America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, WA.
On a rainy day last month, I visited the 165,000 square foot facility to photograph a few shiny, chromey things. If you’ve ever wondered what that bread-loaf-looking-building adjacent to the Tacomadome off I-5 is, wonder no more.

The facility houses most of the car collection of the late Harold LeMay. All the vehicles are, as the museum name implies, domestic. After shooting a gorgeous 1969 Chevy Camaro SS 350 and 1966 Buick Skylark GS, collections manager Reneé Crist gave me a tour on something with a lot less horsepower—a golf cart. I immediately recognized why the golf cart was needed. This place is HUGE. The top floor is just one of four total, all packed with autos parked as tight as jets on an aircraft carrier.

The building itself is a one-of-a-kind gem. Designed by Alan Grant of GrantPrice in Los Angeles, it looks like some sort of futuristic transportation vehicle has landed among the domed and coned Tacoma skyline. The top floor gallery is no less grand. It’s a big, bold building made for big, bold cars.
